David Yurman grew up on Long Island, NY and first stepped out as a designer and businessman selling little sculptures in his high school cafeteria. Later, at age 16, he was introduced to Cuban welder and sculptor Ernesto Gonzales while visiting his sister in Provincetown, MA. In sculpting, David found an outlet and focus for his creativity, which he would develop over the next two decades as an apprentice under the tutelage of renowned sculptors Jacques Lipshitz and Theodore Rozack (he collaborated with Picasso and Modigliani). Following a year at NYU, David left college and hitchhiked across the country to California where he found refuge in the beatnik artist colony of Big-Sur.
In the late 1960s, David returned from his bohemian sojourn in California to Greenwich Village where he began working with sculptor Hans Van de Bovenkamp. It was in his studio that David met Sybil Kleinrock, a gifted painter who, like David, recently returned from the beatnik scene in California.
He was interested in design from a relatively early age and in the 1960s sculpture was his main passion. David would live and work with the bohemian crowd of the day and Greenwich Village in the 1960′s must have been an inspiring place to be for an up and coming artist.
It was in a studio that David met a young woman named Sybil. They quickly fell in love and David started designing pieces of jewelry for Sybil to wear. It was whilst wearing one of his creations that a chance encounter sparked a chance for the couple that would change their lives forever. Whilst attending an art exhibition Sybil was wearing a belt buckle that Yurman had made for her. The design caught the eye of the gallery owner who asked if the design could be produced on a commercial scale. Because this item was so personal to David he declined the offer but realized for the first time that his designs had commercial appeal.
